Hal covered with bees

The Bots and the Bees is the fourteenth episode of Season 1 of Malcolm in the Middle and the fourteenth episode overall of the show.

Summary[]

With Lois visiting Francis at military school, Hal helps the Krelboynes make a robot.

Plot[]

In the cold opening, Malcolm, Reese and Dewey diligently search the house for quarters to use on a kickboxing game at the local arcade, running back and forth between them whenever they run out of lives.

Malcolm invites his Krelboyne classmates over and they show him a tape on an open competition where killer robots brawl. They wish to enter due to their number designs, plans, knowledge, barely any social life, and the fact Dabney's father tries to buy his sons love. The only downside is that their parents would never allow them to do something as dangerous as this, knowing Malcolm's house has a total lack of caring adult supervision.

Meanwhile, Lois is preparing to visit Francis at his school after he become severely injured. Hal is skeptical as hey haven't spent a night apart ever since Francis was first born, but reluctantly agrees. The next morning the boys know that Lois will only be away for 4 to 5 days so the best time to ask Hal for something is when he is distracted. Dewey wishes to wear his pajamas to school and Reese wants to obtain a scope for his BB gun, Malcolm reminds Reese he doesn't have a BB gun to which Reese replies "Not yet". Malcolm states he should go first due to his more dangerous plan knowing anything after "killer robot" would sound reasonable. Hal easily agrees, Malcolm is surprised himself.

Craig comes over incorrectly assuming Lois was having an operation, also assuming Francis shot her, Hal quickly corrects her.

In Alabama, Francis is in tremendous pain mentioning how every time he breathes in he feels like his stomach is full of broken glass but is ecstatic about it. He states to Finley he can use it against Lois appeasing her guilt since he almost died and she was the one who sent him away and knows she has the inability to argue about it, dismiss it or try to make it his fault.

Back at home, Hal has trouble sleeping without Lois and creepily rubs Bengay all over her pillow, only to stay up all night eating frosting, junk food and watching a violent war movie. Malcolm awakes the next day to find Hal giving Malcolm some help for his robot, a large buzz saw which slices a chair in half, Malcolm is shocked but Hal only shrugs it off as too slow and contemplates adding a larger blade.

Back at Marlin Academy, Francis can't believe his mother missed them inserting his catheter, and debates whether or not he should pull it out just so they can reinsert it when she arrives. His enfeebled roommate tells him to stop whining about his mom since no one is that bad, Francis claims he'll see his point when she arrives. Lois arrives and tells Francis he looks terrible. Francis wonders if she thinks that’s going to appease her guilt, but she doesn’t know what he means and opens up the blinds since the room is too stuffy and asks Francis about the last time he had a bowel movement. Commandant Spangler arrives and introduces himself to her and when she asks what happened to his eye. Lois then asks if his ears work and if he has business with her son because he needs to rest.

Later Malcolm and his friends work on some blueprints and have trouble deciding on the best design discussing how much speed and torque they will need, Lloyd's idea for a killer butterfly is shot down for being too unreliable. Hal later walks in and after viewing the plans states the flamethrower would work best. Lloyd mentions their parents disapprove of this, Hal states they shouldn't tell their parents, leaving them all awestruck. Dabney claims that Hal's lack of responsibility is oddly thrilling.

Back at Marlin academy, Lois gets ready to spend the night with Francis due to all the hotels in town being booked for a local gay rodeo. Spangler attempts to make a pass at Lois but is shot down. Lois doesn't mind since by the way Francis complained about it she thought it would be nothing but a couple of cots and a drain in the floor. She tells Francis he needs a sponge bath, Francis reluctantly agrees. Francis informs her of how much pain he was in and how his appendix burst and they had to vacuum out the contents from inside his body and she couldn’t comprehend how much pain he was in. Lois confirms she knows nothing about pain giving birth to four boys totalling up to 120 hours of labour with Francis’ birth accounting for half of that time. Francis apologizes that he came out feet first but Lois tells him not to worry about it since she forgave him years ago. While sponging him down, she lectures him about his tattoo and how it took years for her to get Hal to burn his off. Francis questions that his dad had a tattoo, she states he put her name across his rear end assuming she'd be flattered by it, but after years of hounding him she finally squeezed the rebellion out of him. Francis can't believe that his father had a wild side, Lois tells him one day he'll meet a nice girl and she'll do the same for him before giving him a washcloth to do his lowers.

The next morning Malcolm and his brothers are watching "Xiaolin Dragon" a kung fu TV series on VHS. Malcolm states that now that they've finished the final video they are now officially desensitized to violence. Dewey has drank a frighteningly large amount of orange sodas and is now hyper claiming he can now write on his tongue. Reese states that they can start on "Monks of Death" or or lighten things up with "Samurai Bloodfest". Just then Malcolm's friends arrive and tell Malcolm that they're backing out of the competition because of how far Hal has taken the project off the edge and ask for their blueprints back. In the backyard Malcolm finds Hal smoking a cigarette while working on the robot listening to Fire by the Chicago Players. He give the boys back their blueprints claiming he has come up with a better idea: a laser guided bee cannon. Malcolm wonders how it could hurt a robot but Hal claims it's for the person controlling the robot and it's a guaranteed winner. The Krelboynes are terrified about how sadistic and insane Hal has become with Stevie claiming that it will end badly before leaving. Malcolm goes back inside just as Hal joins in howling with a pack of dogs.

Back at Marlin Academy, Lois plays foosball with the cadets and has a good time Francis starts to become jealous and wants her to leave.

At home Hal dances around in his underwear with a shirt on his head to I Just Want to Celebrate by Rare Earth. Malcolm states that Lois being gone was fun but starts to get out of control, as Reese and Dewey eat tubs of ice cream. The phone rings and Malcolm hopes it's his mom but it is Hal’s boss Mr. Jackson who calls Hal. Hal tells him he has a very good reason for not coming into work because eight hours of "joyless, mind-numbing crap" just didn’t seem like fun to him. After retaliating his statement Hal tells Mr. Jackson they’re going to have to agree to disagree before hanging up and rips the phone out of the wall.

Later Craig arrives to drop off Lois' paycheque but Malcolm pleads for his help since his dad has gone off the deep end since he is smoking, dancing around in his underwear and ripping phones out of the wall. Craig assures Malcolm he’ll handle the situation, before going to the fridge claiming he can’t work on an empty stomach.

In the backyard Hal works on the robot while Reese and Dewey observe. Craig arrives and informs Hal that Malcolm told him he could use some company. Hal states that he has his sons and they are bonding before turning his robot entitled "Lois II" towards him and tells him of his secret deadly project. Craig tells Hal to sit down so they can talk about things rationally, but Hal calls him fat and tells him he doesn’t want him around his house anymore. Craig says if he doesn’t go to the fat thing he won’t go to the crazy thing. Hal ends up pinning him on the ground forcing him to say uncle. Malcolm begs him to stop, Reese says it's not funny anymore and Dewey tells him to let Craig go. Hal realizes they're right and he has more important things to do, announcing that he’s decided to take the robot down to his workplace and destroy Mr. Jackson's Lexus.

Malcolm grabs the remote and tells his father that he is stopping him from quitting his job by threatening him with a killer robot, wishing it was half as cool as it sounded. Hal tells Malcolm to put the remote down as he is unaware of the power the robot is capable of. Malcolm begs Hal to stop acting crazy and sit down because he doesn't want to hurt him. They stare each other down until Craig grabs the remote which activates the robot and sets Hal as a target. Hal tells them to run, Malcolm, Craig, Reese and Dewey run to the house as the robot fires a swarm of bees at a terrified Hal which swarm him covering his entire head and torso in bees.

Hal asks them to call animal control but Malcolm reminds him that he ripped the phone out of the wall. He suggests they go to the neighbors but they won't let them over anymore, he suggests doing anything. Malcolm suggests they all sit down and no one will do anything until Lois gets home, Hal agrees and rests his hip against a table.

In Alabama, Francis and Lois go to the gay rodeo together and have a great time. Lois asks Francis if he is embarrassed to be seen with his mother but Francis reassures her that he is enjoying their time together as everyone else in the audience are composed of mothers and sons.

Trivia[]

  • The episode title is a pun off of "The birds and the bees".
  • Bryan Cranston is known to enjoy doing his own stunts. After one of the show's writers asked jokingly whether he would be willing to wear a suit of live bees Cranston said he would, so the script for this episode was written around this. He ended up covered in 10,000 bees, and only got stung once.
  • It also shares a name with a Futurama episode.
  • The bot that Hal ends up making is named the "Lois II".
  • When the robot saws the chair in half, a thin shiny line can be seen in the bottom right hand corner of the screen that helps make the chair halves fall over.
  • Malcolm and Reese's voices start breaking in this episode, although their voices do not become fully deep until season 3.
  • During the scene where Hal is building "Lois II" the song that is playing is "Fire" by Ohio Players.
  • The song that plays in the scene where Hal is dancing in his underwear is "I Just Want to Celebrate" by Rare Earth.
  • The episode ends without any proper resolution and Hal still covered in bees, leaving his condition was once Lois got home unclear. Since Stevie lives three blocks away, it’s possible that Malcolm was able to use the phone at his house to call animal control.
    • Also, despite Hal ripping the kitchen phone out of the wall, we see earlier in the same episode (when Hal calls Marlin Academy) that there's a second phone located in the master bedroom.
